In early February, the kitchen at Mert's Cakes was converted into a film set when Jamie and Bobby Deen (sons of the queen of southern cuisine, Paula Deen) rolled into the Derby City. Armed with wit, ingenuity and a passion for food, the Deen brothers offer a fresh, fun look at the specialty stores and family run businesses that make one-of-a-kind edibles.
With producers and film crew in tow, it was lights...camera... action for Mert's owner, Virginia Rankin. Jamie and Bobby were anxious for Virginia to share with them the art of producing Louie's Derby Cake, the official cake of Churchill Downs and The Kentucky Derby. While Virginia didn't reveal all the secrets of the butter cake recipe acquired from her grandmother, "Mamaw Mert," she did instruct the Deens on creating the perfect praline mixture, mixing the batter and getting the cakes into the oven.
After baking, Jamie and Bobby had a lot of fun moistening the cakes with bourbon and drizzling them with dark chocolate. In typical brotherly fashion, it was a race to see who would get the first bite of their moist and tasty creations.
The Louie's Derby Cake segment can be seen on Jamie and Bobby Deen's show, "Road Tasted."
